Pattens have been repairing clocks since 1932, when they started up in Westcliff, Essex by Mr Evelyn Patten selling jewellery and doing clock repairs and watch repairs. In 1940 the business moved to Hadleigh, Essex where they stayed until 2000. The company were well known in the area for their clock repairs and watch repairs. At that time it was decided to shut the retail side of the business, as it was getting harder for the smaller shops to compete with the out of town centres, and concentrate on the clock repair business where the skill of the individual craftsman is important.
The business moved to Benfleet, Essex and is thriving there with a clock repair workshop which although small can handle all types of clock repairs except electric clock repairs. Pattens is a 3rd generation family business and is run by myself and my wife, Rosemary, the original owner's grand-daughter .
I have been repairing clocks at Pattens since the late 1980's. I was admitted as a Freeman to the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1994 and received the Freedom of the City of London in 1996.
In 1998 I was made a Fellow of the British Horological Institute and in 1994 I became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers. In 2002 I was invited to become a Liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, which I of course accepted and continued until 2015.
My workshop is in Benfleet, Essex, UK., where I have facilities to manufacture many of the parts needed for repairs on the older clocks to return them to going order. For security purposes, personal visitors to the workshop are strictly by prior appointment only. I can normally collect and deliver your clock to your home or workplace. We cover most of southern Essex from Maldon to Southend and Brentwood to Basildon as well as Benfleet, Canvey Island, Rayleigh, Hockley etc. and specialise in Longcase (Grandfather and Grandmother) clocks as well as repairing other types of antique and modern clocks including mantle clocks, carriage clocks, wall clocks, cuckoo clocks and office clocks.
In line with the new data protection act, we hold the following details on our database, your name, address phone number, clock description and details of the repair carried out. This is held for us to look back on any previous repair work we have done to your clock. NONE of this information is given to anyone else outside the workshop and is not used for any marketing purposes.
